The Third Life

Chronicles.

Recently, I came across stories in local newspapers about men and women whose lives were upended by unforeseen events. One story stuck with me, and I believe I can share its essential details. This story convinced me that we often have untapped potential that we sometimes manage to bring to light, even by chance.

Casteldrago, June 21 – Silvia, a 67-year-old pensioner, recently experienced something that changed the course of her life.

During one of her walks, at the end of a rugged path, she came across a gate hidden by vegetation. She opened it and found a garden in complete disarray.

Journalist: "Silvia, what did you think when you opened that gate and saw the garden for the first time?"

Silvia: "It was incredible, a completely accidental discovery. I often go for walks, and that day I had chosen a destination about 50 kilometers from where I live, a path far from town, in the countryside. My dog needs to run, and so do I, now that I have more time for myself… I called the dog back, who had been missing for a few minutes. I saw the direction and followed him along a small path leading to the Ritagli watering hole. It was like stepping into another world. I saw an old, rusty iron gate and decided to go in. I found a small clearing; though I didn’t realize at first that it was a garden. It was completely overgrown, with plants and flowers growing in all directions. I felt drawn to that place immediately, as if it were calling me."

Journalist: "And then you found that plaque..."

Silvia: "Yes, while as I was observing an area thick with vegetation, I noticed something shiny under a bush. It was a brass plaque with the name Leondina Conti and a date from the 19th century. I immediately wondered who she was and why this garden existed. The name felt familiar, and I soon discovered that she was my great-great-grandmother."

Journalist: "How did you find out Leondina was your ancestor?"

Silvia: " I started researching and discovered the connection through old documents! Leondina was respected for her botanical knowledge and for cultivating medicinal plants— a sort of pharmacist, you might say."

The restoration of the botanic garden and the discovery of her family roots led Silvia to dedicate much of her time to studying her ancestor’s gardening techniques and restoring the medicinal and ornamental plants in the garden, to their original state. With permission from the local government, which had taken ownership of the land, the garden is now accessible to the public. "It’s become my sanctuary," she explains. "I feel connected to Leondina and my family’s history in ways I never imagined. I asked for permission to restore it, and they usually grant it when the intentions are focused on preservation."

When asked how this discovery has influenced her life, Silvia replies: "It has given me a new sense of purpose. I never thought I could do something like this..."

Journalist: "What has it meant to you to bring that garden back to life?"

Silvia: "It has been a continuous process of discovery. Every plant that grows, every flower that blooms, feels like a message from the past. This garden has awakened a part of me I didn’t know existed."

Journalist: "What do you plan to do now with this new discovery and the ‘rediscovered garden’?"

Silvia: "I want to continue taking care of it, not just for myself but for my family and future generations. I’d like to open the garden to the public to share this story and emphasize the importance of preserving historical memories. It has become an integral part of my life, and I feel it’s my duty to protect and share it. I must admit, maintaining the garden is very demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding work."

Journalist: "How has your family reacted to your new passion?"

Silvia: "At first, they were a bit skeptical and didn’t understand why I was devoting so much time to this project. But once they saw the results of my work and how important this garden is to me, they began to support me. Now, some of them even help with maintenance and historical research. It’s become a family project."

Journalist: "Do you have any advice for those who, like you, might stumble upon a piece of family history?"

Silvia: "I’d say always follow your instincts and don’t be afraid to explore the past. Discovering your roots can give new meaning to your life and open up incredible opportunities."

Journalist: "Thank you, Silvia, for sharing your story with us."

Silvia: "Thank you for reminding me that I have a third life to consider."

Silvia, from pensioner to custodian of a precious historical and family legacy, reminds us that life always holds surprises. She invites us to turn each day into an opportunity for personal growth, without ever forgetting who we were in past generations and recognizing that, while we will always be who we were, we can still change in small but meaningful ways.
